I am a little torn about who is going to win some of these awards versus who SHOULD win them, as is typical. Still others I'm one the fence about who that will even be.
AL Gold Gloves
P - Kenny Rogers - has the best statistics and has the name recognition, so should and will win
C - Jason Varitek - probably should win the award, but an argument could be made for others; has the best name recognition so probably will win
1B - Justin Morneau - the former AL MVP has good stats and name recognition, but Lyle Overbay is actually more deserving
2B - Dustin Pedroia - has great stats and plays for a contender, but probably should lose out to Mark Ellis in Oakland
3B - Alex Rodriguez - Mr. All-World gets another award, and semi-deserves it
SS - Michael Young - despite limited win totals and being overshadowed all season by Josh Hamilton and Ian Kinsler, Young has had a great season defensively
OF - Torii Hunter - no errors this year + a stellar reputation = gold glove
OF - Jacoby Ellsbury - Ellsbury has earned his keep in the outfield for the Sox this year, making some great plays and giving up no errors
OF - Nick Markakis - ok, he's a stretch, but usually someone with a cannon-arm makes it on, and Markakis had 16 outfield assists this year; if not Markakis, then probably Grady Sizemore
NL Gold Gloves
P - Greg Maddux - the common thought is that this is Maddux's to win as long as he's still in the league, however Brandon Webb has a better fielding percentage and almost as many total chances, so he SHOULD win it
C - Geovany Soto - the rookie phenom isn't just a hitter, but a slick fielder with a good arm
1B - Albert Pujols - has comparable stats with Lance Berkman, but will win out based on reputation
2B - Brandon Phillips - typically more of an offensive force, but he stepped it up defensively this year and will be rewarded for it
3B - Troy Glaus - also known as more of an offensive threat, Glaus picked it up this year, having one of the best fielding percentages among starters and the only one with over 300 chances and less than 10 errors
SS - Jimmy Rollins - last year's NL MVP had a great year defensively despite angering fans and slacking off in offensive production at times
OF - Nate McLouth - no errors and the fourth most total chances in the league would be a lot for anyone else to overcome
OF - Hunter Pence - 16 outfield assists, 1 error, .997 fielding percentage, 4 double plays from right field for the Astros...need I say more?
OF - Carlos Beltran - should be Cody Ross on stats alone, but Beltran's had the most chances this year and has done a very good job patrolling centerfield for the Mets
Next Up, Silver Sluggers...
